Getting Started with LaTeX
This set of pages helps you complete your first compilable English LaTeX document and, when needed, continue consulting specific usage instructions for text, structure, or editors. It is not a course that must be completed in order: if you already know what problem you need to solve, simply open the corresponding page.
Where to Start
| Your goal | Read directly |
|---|---|
| Create and compile a English document for the first time | Creating and compiling your first document |
Understand \documentclass, the preamble, and \usepackage | Document classes, the preamble, and packages |
| Write paragraphs, headings, tables of contents, or lists | Paragraphs, line breaks, headings, and lists |
| Add bold, italic, underlined, or emphasized text | Text emphasis: bold, italic, and underline |
| Set the main file and compiler, then inspect the platform preview | Editing and Compiling in EasyLaTeX |
Default Environment
The English examples in this tutorial use pdfLaTeX + article by default:
-
Select the
articledocument class when creating a new English article; -
Select
pdfLaTeXas the compiler; -
Use the template's font configuration and font resources available to platform compilation;
-
Recompile after each modification, and first read the first error in the error messages.
The following is a minimal English document that can serve as a starting point for other pages:
\documentclass[a4paper,12pt]{article}
\begin{document}
Hello, LaTeX!
\end{document}
