Format a LaTeX Paper: Layout, References, and Tables

HelpEasyLaTeXPublished

Centralize the class, page setup, citation style, and recurring table rules. Let the template and preamble manage global formatting while the body expresses content and structure.

Centralize Setup in the Main File

Create main.tex and refs.bib at the project root and choose pdfLaTeX. This complete main file combines page, math, table, and bibliography settings:

\documentclass[a4paper,11pt]{article}
\usepackage[a4paper,margin=1in]{geometry}
\usepackage{amsmath,booktabs,siunitx}
\usepackage[backend=biber,style=numeric]{biblatex}
\addbibresource{refs.bib}
\usepackage{hyperref}
\title{Formatting Example}
\author{Your Name}
\date{\today}
\begin{document}
\maketitle
\section{Method}\label{sec:method}
For background, see~\parencite{knuth1984}.
\begin{align}
  f(x)&=x^2+2x+1,\\
      &=(x+1)^2.
\end{align}
\begin{table}[tbp]
\centering
\caption{Illustrative values}\label{tab:values}
\begin{tabular}{l S[table-format=1.3] S[table-format=2.1]}
\toprule
Model & {Score} & {Time (s)} \\
\midrule
A & 0.812 & 12.3 \\
B & 0.867 & 15.8 \\
\bottomrule
\end{tabular}
\end{table}
See Table~\ref{tab:values}.
\printbibliography
\end{document}

Use this database:

@book{knuth1984,
  author = {Donald E. Knuth},
  title = {The TeXbook},
  publisher = {Addison-Wesley},
  year = {1984}
}
@book{lamport1994,
  author = {Leslie Lamport},
  title = {LaTeX: A Document Preparation System},
  edition = {2},
  publisher = {Addison-Wesley},
  year = {1994}
}

Generate the title through \title, \author, and \maketitle. Local grouped adjustments can be appropriate, but scattered size and spacing commands should not replace a coherent global setup.

Separate Bibliography Data from Style

The body cites keys while biblatex's loading options select presentation. Replace the existing loading line with one alternative, not both:

\usepackage[backend=biber,style=numeric]{biblatex}
\usepackage[backend=biber,style=authoryear]{biblatex}

After changing styles, check fields and submission requirements. A new template may require changes to commands and bibliography configuration; do not assume the body and setup are always interchangeable.

Use Table and Math Packages

  • booktabs supplies consistent horizontal rules.
  • siunitx S columns parse and align numbers. Protect textual headers with braces and normally put units in the heading.
  • amsmath align aligns multiline equations without manual spaces.

The values in the example illustrate alignment. Handle notes and non-numeric cells using the package's supported syntax or choose an appropriate text column.

Review the Whole Template Configuration

Upload required template files and start from its sample main file. Check the class, package options, title/author commands, abstract, bibliography system, and float rules. Changing only the class name does not complete a migration.

Avoid conflicting package loads, preserve required template settings, and move content incrementally. Inspect margins, fonts, figures, tables, citations, and front matter after compilation.
